Sometimes it feels like there are a million bills to keep track of, right? This one direct debits, that one doesn’t, this one always ends up bigger than you expect. So it’s worth knowing if there are ways to combine them and maybe save yourself a headache.

Phone and Internet Bundles do just that. You can opt to get multiple services from the same provider, reduce the admin, and potentially save a bit of money.

Are there different types of bundles?
Remember when you had to share a landline with your whole family and get off the phone to use the Internet? We do (barely). Back then, given that your Internet was transmitted over your phone line, it made sense to sell the two services together.

Nowadays, it’s that much rarer to find someone who has a home phone than someone who hasn’t, so the market for Home Phone and Internet Bundles has obviously slowed down. While you can still find them, bundles involving Mobile Plans are more common. There are also a few other options on offer. Broadly, the main types of bundles are:

Home Phone and Internet Bundles: This is exactly what it says on the tin, a home phone line and an Internet connection – usually high-speed NBN. Home phone lines connected to the NBN don’t use traditional phone connections. Instead, calls are transmitted as data over NBN infrastructure. This is called ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’, or VoIP.
Mobile Phone and Internet Bundles: These plans give you a Mobile Phone Plan (instead of a landline) with your Internet connection.
‘Triple Play’ Bundles: Certain providers bundle Broadband Internet with pay TV, plus a home phone line using VoIP.
It’s rare for any two bundles to be exactly the same. Different providers offer different plans, even if they’re selling the same kinds of products. There can be differences in price, how much they charge for international calls, whether a lock-in contract applies, and a slew of other things to consider.

What’s usually included in a Phone and Internet Bundle?
This can vary greatly, and it also depends on what you want. Some people need extra data, some people want an entertainment package. However, Mobile Phone and Internet Bundles might include:

$0 setup and connection fees
a data allowance, or unlimited data, for your Internet connection
a discount for combining your services.
Keep in mind there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to bundling. So you should always consider what you need before checking out which option is right for you.

Does every provider offer bundles?
No, not every provider bundles Phone and Internet plans. In fact, the kinds of services that are bundled and how much they cost will vary from provider to provider.

How do I compare different bundles?
So, we’ve established that not every bundle is created equal. But what about comparing them? What do you need to look out for to make sure you’re getting a suitable deal?

That’s the million dollar (or gigabyte!) question. So here are a couple of tips to help you make your choice:

Contract type: Some plans come with lock-in contracts. These contracts require you to keep your Phone and Internet Bundle – and keep paying it – for a certain period of time. If you discontinue your service before the end of this contract, you might be required to pay an early termination fee.
Data allowance: There are few things more frustrating than having your Internet come to a crawl because you accidentally went over your monthly data limit! Luckily, these days, many providers offer unlimited Internet data. Still, it’s important to check whether there are any restrictions.

Internet speed: Providers offer different speeds for different Internet plans, usually measured in Mbps (megabits per second). For reference, Netflix recommends a speed of 3 Mbps to stream their content in high definition – though many plans offer much higher speeds than this.
Number of users: The number of people using an Internet connection makes a difference to the speed you can get. When you’re considering a speed tier, see if there’s a recommended number of users attached to it.
Phone plan: You’ll want to look at a few things here. How many free calls will you get each month? What’s the charge on international calls? For mobile phones, will you get 4G or 5G Internet? Free texts? A hefty allowance of data? The list goes on.
Fun bonuses: Some providers will throw in extras with their bundle, like a discounted subscription to a streaming service.
As with any purchase, it’s all a matter of juggling priorities. Price often plays a big part, but you’ll also want to consider what else is important to you. It might be that you need a plan that lets you make a lot of free calls, or maybe a top-notch Internet plan is more important and you don’t need all the bells and whistles when it comes to your phone.

It’s ultimately your decision. But if you want to make an informed choice, it never hurts to read the key fact sheet for your preferred plan. This document is offered by most providers on their websites.

What else should I consider?
It’s a good idea to consider your personal circumstances before taking out a Phone and Internet Bundle. For instance, if you’re renting a property, you might need to ask your landlord if they’re okay with an NBN connection being installed. If they say no, it probably rules out this kind of Internet plan.

Alternatively, you might intend to move to a new place in the near future. In this case, you’ll want to check out whether you’ll incur any extra costs for moving your connection to a new address. Or, you might even prefer a flexible or short-term contract that will let you switch to a new provider when you move.

Finally, there’s your budget. You’ll want to seek out a bundle doesn’t push your balance sheet into the red. But that doesn’t always mean you’ll have to settle for a raw deal: you might still be able to find that special deal that balances price with quality. It just takes a little research to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want.
